[Interview] Summaiya Rizwan talks about her comeback, new TV show, and TVC stint
Summaiya Rizwan is one of the very known names of our broadcast journalism field and news anchor fraternity. The former face of ARY News has been on an extended break since the dawn of this year. Now she is ready to make a comeback on screen in a new role Team MediaSpring PK got a chance to speak to her.
Here is how that conversation went.
While you were on the break how much did you miss your work, the presence on screen and now tell us about the project you are coming back with this time?
Summaiya: It is natural that while you are part of a field, especially, if you have spent so much time on screen, then it is inevitable to miss the whole experience. So, yes during my break I did miss it.having said that I was looking for a change, wanted to start something
The break was important, I’d say because I was looking for a change as wanted to start something different. And it is not very easy because when you want to try something new it is important to understand that ambitions demand patience, you need to look at the opportunities you get and how useful they are.
Now what I am coming back with, on the screen, is a different experience for me, it will be challenging because the role is different but let’s see how is the response, but I am very hopeful.
During your break you appeared in a TVC, how was the response?
Summaiya: The response was tremendous. Here, however, it is pertinent to mention that I not only did one TVC, there were quite a few of them but some of them were not highlighted well. For example the TVC of Nestle that I did last year, that went really well. But this particular TVC got the better response because it was based on two characters only – a mother and a son.
After that many offers of ads and TVCs came in, especially during the break I was offered two TVCs one was of a telecom brand and the other was a washing powder TVC, which was to be shot in Thailand. Offers were good but I had to refuse because I was on a break from work. But now as I am back on screen and ended the break, hopefully, you will see me in a TVC or ad film soon.
Are you returning to the same TV channel – ARY News?
Summaiya: I am not returning with ARY as i resigned from the a few month’s ago. This new project of mine is for the channel which is my parent organization I started my career some eleven years ago from PTV and now it is good to be back at Pakistan Television. this is a different channel. Parent institute 11 years ago started by career PTV. I am not resuming ARY resigned. January after Umran
I wanted to do a TV program of my own and before leaving for Umran in January, I discussed it with the management of ARY News, however there was no slot available all they had to offer me was news which I had no interest in doing. this is a different channel. Parent institute 11 years ago started by career PTV. I am not resuming ARY resigned. January after Umran
Now I am with PTV and hopefully will do a few shows for them and see how things work out. The best part of my proejcct at PTV is the honor of working with iconic producer Mr. Aslam Sheikh who has shows like Geomentry and Jahan Been on his credit.
You have MashAllah four kids and you are a working woman a known face how do you maintain the balance between these two different roles?
Summaiya: I have four kids MashAllah and maintaining the work life balance is very challenging in fact I always keep wondering how to maintain and sustain the name and image I have established in the industry. What I want is that it does not matter if I work less of work but it should be worthwhile. Less is good if it is done with diligence, I belive.
Any tip or a message for the working women in Pakistan that you would like to share?
Summaiya: Being a working woman, a wife and a mother myself I’d say that one should not ignore one’s passion but having said that one should not ignore kids also. because kids are your future. Your work is important but that is you your present kids are the future and their training education and brought up is important it should go hand in hand with your career.
Remember kids are your future. Your work is important but that is you – your present while the kids are the future and their training, education, and upbringing is very important. That role of a mother should go hand in hand with your career.
Lastly, what would be the message or advice from Summaiya Rizwan to the budding anchors and TV hosts?
Summaiya: As I have said in my previous interviews too reading is important. Youngsters these days ignore it as they have no idea how much reading habit is helpful. And when we say reading it is not just the course of your academics it is going beyond that. Your reading and study define your knowledge and once you have it you can be successful on screen no matter what. In my opinion, a good reader makes a very good TV anchor
