Glimpse from PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2016: Day-3
The Pakistan Fashion Design Council in collaboration with Sunsilk presented the third day of the ninth PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week. Indeed the 9th PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week marks the fourteenth fashion week platform initiated by the Pakistan Fashion Design Council [with eight weeks of prêt-à-porter and five of bridal fashion] and is a direct manifestation of the Council’s commitment to sustainability and discipline within the business of fashion and the facilitation of Pakistan’s retail industry. Indeed #PSFW16 endeavours to define and present trends for 2016, focusing specifically on fashion for the regions’ long hot summer months. Day-3 marked the first day of the afternoon High-Street fashion shows featuring Hang Ten, DSS, Umer Iftikhar and Denizen and designer prét-a-porter shows by Khaadi Khaas, The House of Kamiar Rokni, Zonia Anwaar, Saira*Shakira, Zara Shahjahan and HSY later in the evening.
The PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2016 team comprises of HSY as the event producer and show choreographer with Nabila N Pro/NGENTs as official stylists, front stage management by Maheen Kardar Ali and the PIFD student team, backstage management by Product 021 and the PIFD student team, logistics by Brandlogics, event consultancy by Eleventh Experience, Digital Agency Pakka Papita, PFDC’s official spokesperson Kamiar Rokni, official red carpet host Rehan Babar, The PFDC Destinations Man on the Scene RJ Khalid Malik, photography by Faisal Farooqui and the team at Dragonfly, Hum TV as official media partners, CityFM89 as the Official Radio Partners with all media management by Lotus Client Management & Public Relations.
The High Street Fashion segment on Day-3 of PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2016 was opened by premier Pakistani high-street brand ‘Hang Ten’. The brand showcased their Spring/Summer 2016 collection ‘The Nautical Look’ which takes its inspiration from the Cruise and is based in a dynamic colour palette featuring different hues of blues, greys, whites, reds mixing up with not-so-nautical colours such as mustard, orange and turquoise. The collection was predominantly based in knitted cottons and featured separates such as polo shirts with embroidered badges, denim, shorts and bermudas. ‘The Nautical Look’ primarily featured menswear pieces and with its nautical theme, exhibited a particular focus on stripes.
Following Hang Ten was designer Dur-e-Shahwar who showcased her collection “The Queen of Hearts” this 2016 at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week under her label DSS. The collection was a tribute to the legendry Lady Diana, her Elegance, Style, royalty and femininity. Based in tones of deep red, coffee gold and solid black, the trends featured in the collection were modern embellishment details, unconventional cuts of jackets, layering and motif details.
Designer Umer Iftikhar showcased his “Banjaranama” collection in the high-street segment of PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week. The collection was inspired by a “Banjaranama”; a story of a guy who leaves his homeland in search of existence. He travels around the globe, returns back to embrace the sparkling sands- the fertility of his own soils- of the land he had once abandoned. He finds himself surrounded by obsolete voices of all that had gone by. He figures out his Hobo’s Heart and realizes that in this world there remains no slot for the ones who wonder. After realizing the cruel treatment of society against the transgenders, Banjaranama is a dedication to all those people who are homeless in their own homes. Fabrics used in this collection were organza and zari for the sheer look, shimmer and silks are used to get the shiny look. Karandi and cottons were also used with a colour palette covering gold, black and cream colours that were combined with traditional shades which depict the theme. Light embellishments were used with heavy embroideries, bringing life to the garments combining traditional art and craft with modern yet trendy silhouettes.
The concluding High Street Fashion show of the day was presented by Denizen which made its PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week debut with their “On-The-Go” High-Street collection. The collection was inspired by the millennials and the go-getters who stand out because of their funk mantra and encapsulates the youth and their lifestyle. The range gives a mix of styles for both men and women, which work for the lifestyle of these Denizens and their travel activities. For women the silhouettes were boxy with light weight fabrics and Slim fit silhouettes for the menswear in light weight twills, chambrays, linen paired with twill pants, denim and mélange shorts. The colour palette ranged from shades of blues and greens with streaks of bright colors such as reds & yellows. “On-The-Go” featured trends such as jogger pants, skate shorts, trackpants, printed tights, Jacquard printing, eye catching graphic tees with funky techniques and hand woven fabrics.
The afternoon prêt-à-porter shows on Day-3 were opened by designer label Khaadi Khaas which showcased their luxury prét collection “Translucent” at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2016. “Translucent” is inspired from the asymmetrical form of nature; where each element is unique on its own – yet as a whole looks alike. Swarovski crystals, pearls and acrylics were the focus of this collection along with the fluidity of different translucent fabrics. The monochromatic palette with pops of neon and pastels all added to the dramatic feel of the pieces, especially with the use of sharp angles and cuts. The collection celebrated the different facets of each Swarovski crystal, while alluding to a sense of symmetry and balance to ultimately create a cohesive composition. Cleaner sharper lines around the silhouette reflect a more tailored look for this collection. With experimental symmetry, in both patterns and placements, the collection manifests the role of transparencies – where solid and sheer fabrics meet to create varying densities. The collection featured wrap detailing, voluminous pants and subtle see-through effect on silks, organza, georgettes and Khaadi handwoven fabrics.
The House of Kamiar Rokni
Design trio Kamiar Rokni, Tia Noon and Rehan Bashir of the coveted House of Kamiar Rokni showcased a complete version of the capsule collection first presented as part of the British Council’s Fashion DNA programme at Fashion Scout as part of the prestigious London Fashion Week. The collection stayed true to The House of Kamiar Rokni’s love for luxury and celebrates the art of elegance. It draws on a diversity of traditional fabrics and craft techniques, along with engaging cultural and traditional references. The collection is based in a palette of natural tones with the shades of blue and pops of pink across a range of fabrics including organza, jamavar, karandi, net and tissue. The collection featured cuts that vary in length, volume and diversity including layering shirts, jackets, pantsuits and flared trousers for a look that channels modern restrained elegance with pockets of very detailed hand embellishments using thread, zardozi, ari and rilli.
Zonia Anwaar with her fifth showcase at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week showed a collection titled ‘Kievan’ which is inspired by culture of the Kievan Rus era from medieval times by incorporating modern Ukrainian decorative art with their floral and cross stitch intricate prints/patterns. The collection was based in Ukrainian exquisite Geometric shapes and symmetric patterns with thread work details in hand embellished motifs and computerized all overs. Zonia selected a distinct color palette of Antique white with Crab Red, Fused Blue, Denim Navy and Classic Tan. The trends which were highlighted in this collection were self-embroidery textures, Boot cut, 70s sleeves, oversized tunics, crisp cut lines and cutouts.
Saira*Shakira showcased their Spring/Summer 2016 collection ‘Ysatis’ at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week.
Zara Shahjahan returned to the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week platform for the fifth time with a new Luxury/Prêt collection titled “Sartorialist”. The label’s #PSFW16 collection was a modern take on the Kashmiri “Phiran” (oversized kurta) and was coupled with a minimalistic and organic look. The womenswear collection was based in a color palette of earthy shades and soft pastels on pure cotton linen with contemporary chic detailing and edgy silhouettes. Zara Shahjahan’s signature floral motif was an integral part of the collection’s embellishments, which were purposely minimal to ensure that the primary focus is on the silhouette.
Day-3’s finale was presented by Pakistan’s premier designer label, HSY. The brand showcased its S/S Luxury Prét Collection “Be Yourself” which embraces the spirit of individuality. This same ethos manifests itself in the collection, with work inspired from different regions of the world, to create individual statement pieces as a collection of separates which reflect ones’ individuality instead of simply following trends. Based in utilitarian and luxe fabrics alike including mercerized cottons, chiffons, organza and silks, the collection presented a range of menswear and womenswear across a range of silhouettes including cropped jackets, safari suits, along with tunics, trousers which are boot cut or with larger volumes for breathability. Shalwars like the patiala/the 80s balloon shalwar were redone to make it look more contemporary along with presenting interesting detailing such as a distinctive dropped armhole sleeve. From the Ikats of Indonesia to Latin American florals based in sunny yellows and vibrant pinks to hues of indigo and peacock blues, the collection was cheerful with unexpected colour combinations and is a homage to travel, luxury, and the freedom of expression. Film personality and brand spokesperson for HSY, Bilal Ashraf walked the ramp as the brand’s celebrity showstopper.
