On this day in 1989 – The Hillsborough disaster

It remains the worst stadium-related disaster in British history, and one of the world’s worst football disasters. A crush resulted in the deaths of 96 people and injuries to 766 others. The incident has been blamed on the police for letting too many people enter the stadium.

In Liverpool, England the Radio City tower was lit up in tribute to the 96 Liverpool FC fans who died at Hillsborough. Most of the lights in the Radio City 96.7 display on the tower were switched off last night leaving just the number 96 remaining. A minute’s silence will be held across Liverpool at 3.06 pm (GMT) – the time the match was stopped on April 15, 1989.
