[Birthday Special] Ten Best Films and Ten Dance Numbers Madhuri Dixit
Its birthday of Famous Indian actress, Madhuri Dixit, who was born on May 15, 1967. She is known for her dazzling acting skills, her twinkling smile and above all, for her dancing skills. Madhuri Dixit made her debut at the age of 17 with Bollywood film “Abode”, in 1984.
Madhuri Dixit has the record of getting maximum Filmfare award nominations (13). Madhuri has literally ruled the hearts of her fans and opinion of critics with her enthusiasm. She has acted in more than 60 films and she is measured as an icon for the leading actresses of Bollywood in current cohort.
Madhuri is one of those few Bollywood leading ladies who have acted in meaningful roles in the movies and has set some very high standards in the Indian film industry.
Here on her birthday I tried to compile a small list as a tribute (or call it a birthday gift from a fanboy) here are ten her best films and five of her best dance number:
Dil was highest-grossing film of 1990 it repositioned Amir Khan as lead Actor as he was going through a lean patch at that time. This film also turned Madhuri Dixit into a superstar she managed to bag Filmfare Award for Best Actress for this film.
Saajan was highest grossing Bollywood film of 1991, It is partly inspired by the French play Cyrano de Bergerac. This film also has a strong cult following because of its lead cast and music.
Khalnayak is arguably one of the best cult classics from Bollywood that came out in 1990s. This 1993 action thriller was directed by showman of Bollywood Subhash Ghai. Tough there was a huge goof in the film that police traced through Microsoft word (yes that was the application running on the screen of police’s computer when they were trying to trace) where Sanjay Dut (the Khalnayak –bad man) actually is in the jungle. “Choli Ke Peeche” from this film has a cult following and cult critique army at the same time following because of the dance performance of Madhuri and critiques have argument about the lyrics of the film. Madhiuri was nominated for best actress award for this film.
Anjaam was the first time when Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan acted together in a film. Since it was 1994, Madhuri was nominated for the best actress awards for her two films Anjaam was one of those films tough Madhuri won the best actress award but it was for Hum Aap Ke Hain Kon. Shahrukh Khan retained the best actor in a negative role award with Anjaam he won the award in same category a year before for Dar.
Mrityudand released in 1997 was a real award winning drama film about social injustice in India. A film packed with intense acting of Madhuri Dixit and Shabana Azmi directed by Parkash Jha was one of the best dramas produced by Bollywood in 1990s. Film might be only famous among masses for the melodious “Keh do ik baar sajna” song but this film won 10 awards, Madhiri grabbed two awards for best actress and Mrityudand also received Special Jury Award, Best Feature Film, Cinéma Tout Ecran.
Parinda is perhaps the very best suspense thriller ever made by Bollywood (my opinion can be biased since this is my most favorite Bollywood film ever). This film came in 1989, and it turned the face of Hindi cinema since 1980s was the worst time for Bollywood in terms of ideas and quality films. Parinda won two National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards, it was also official entry of India for the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Parinda has been remade in Hollywood as Broken Horses. The song “Tum se mil ke” is one of the best melodies came in 1980s and still a powerful song enough to melt hearts.
Hum Aap ke hein kaun?
The undisputed highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time Hum Aapke Hain Koun was released in 1994. This film was more of Salman Khan’s film rather than Madhuri Dixit’s film. Tough Madhuri won two best actress award for this film (tough she should have won it for Parinda), however film was completely owned and ruled by Salman Khan. This is another Madhiri Dixit film that has a cult like following. HAKHK won total 15 awards.
This 1988 film gave the real big break to Madhri Dixit and announced the arrival of new leading lady of Bollywood. Madhuri Dixit became the Bollywood sensation overnight with the success of this film and Anil Kapoor proved yet again why he was THE best thing in Bollywood in late 1980s. This film also earned first ever filmfare nomination for Madhuri, in fact this film was nominated for 12 awards Anil Kapoor won best actor award for this film.
Dedas released in 2002 based on the 1917 Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novella Devdas. This was perhaps the last best film Madhri did before taking leave from Bollywood. Devdas (not my personal favorite tough) was a real success both in terms of business and awards, it won five national awards, it won 9 Filmfare awards best film award which is a record equalizer as DDLJ won as many Filmfare awards in 1996. Madhur won two awards for Best Supporting actress. Apart from the detailed and lavish sets and costumes, intense acting the film’s two big attractions were song “maar daala” and “Dola Re” when best Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit literally shared the screen to capture the most number of hearts.
Beta was the highest grossing film of 1992, and it was a success at Filmfare Awards too winning five awards – Anil Kapoor won Best Actor, Best Actress award went to Madhuri Dixit,; Filmfare Award for Best Choreography for Saroj Khan, Best Supporting Actress won by Aruna Irani, and Best Female Playback Singer award was received by Anuradha Paudwal for “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga”. This film gave the title of “Dhak Dhak Girl” to Madhuri, interestingly this role was first offered to Sri Devi who happened to be (un announced) arch rival of Madhuri.
